- The rumors have been floating around from some time, but DC Comics finally pulled the trigger on the new Watchmen series. (That is an amazingly apt description, now that I think about it.) Before Watchmen will include seven miniseries and an epilogue for a total of thirty-five issues.
- Fish have to swim, birds have to fly, and comic companies have to exploit their characters. There is a lot of talent involved in this fiasco, which means that this is going to be uneven as hell. If more than one series is any good, I'll be shocked.
- I'm not here to rage. I'd rather they got this all out of their system so that, one way or the other, all this talk of continuing Watchmen will be behind us.
- If there is one highlight of the whole endevour, it's that Darwyn Cooke is involved. That something at least.
- P.S. The new DC logo looks super-90s to me. Come on, how can you mess up two letters?
- P.P.S. While you're at it, here is a defense of the project by JMS. Read and judge for yourself.

Funny thing about all this, is it reminds me how surprised I was that when I finally sat down to read Watchmen I didn't think much of it. I fully expect the prequels to be universally panned, and I equally expect to enjoy them more than the original.
ReplyDeleteI think Watchmen a really a product of its time. I read it for the first time a few years ago and you're right. It doesn't stand up. But I suspect that the problem is that so many comics have been influenced by it that we can appreciate how groundbreaking it was anymore.
DeleteQuite likely. I just remember being disappointed and thinking several times, "Really? This is the comic everyone is so enthralled by? Meh."
DeleteIf the folks involved can manage to create some new and compelling stories with those characters, more power to them. However I'm more than a bit skeptical that what we get will add up to more that SW Ep 1-3 or the second two films of the matrix trilogy. Watchmen stands pretty well on its own, I doubt this new stuff will add much.
ReplyDeleteI think at worst this stuff will be forgetable. And I will absolutely pay attention to the reviews before buying any.
